June sees an increase in air passenger traffic globally

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Global Air Passenger Traffic Rises 9.1% in June . The global commercial air passenger traffic, measured in revenue passenger-kilometers (RPK), continued its upward trend in June 2024, growing by 9.1% compared to the same month last year.

The IATA reported today that the total capacity, assessed in available seat kilometers (ASK), increased by 8.5% year-on-year. The load factor for June reached 85%, marking a 0.5 percentage point increase from June 2023. International demand saw a 12.3% rise compared to June 2023. Capacity grew by 12.7% year-on-year, and the load factor was at 85%, a slight decrease of 0.3 percentage points from June 2023. Whereas domestic demand increased by 4.3% from June 2023, with capacity up by 2.1% year-on-year, and the load factor reached 85%, a 1.7 percentage point increase compared to June 2023.

IATA director-general Willie Walsh noted that demand grew across all regions as the peak Northern summer travel season commenced in June. "With overall capacity growth lagging behind demand, we observed a robust average load factor of 85% in both domestic and international operations. While operating at such high load factors is both beneficial and challenging," Walsh stated.

He emphasized the importance of all stakeholders working efficiently to minimize delays and ensure travelers reach their destinations on time. As the Olympic Games take place in Paris, Walsh highlighted the pride within the aviation industry for its role in supporting the event by transporting many athletes, fans, and officials. The IATA report indicated that Asia Pacific airlines remained key contributors to the industry's traffic growth in June, continuing a trend observed in previous years.

However, it also noted that growth rates are becoming more conservative as the post-pandemic recovery period stabilizes. "Specifically, for the Asia Pacific region, the transition is more pronounced due to significant traffic increases from low levels in 2023, impacting the overall industry passenger traffic growth due to the region's substantial weight in the global figures," the report concluded.
